Welcome to Country: Paul House Conference introduction: Katie Russell, Head of Education, NGA Conference opening address: Artistic Courage by NGA Director Nick Mitzevich Abstract: When moral and ethical dilemmas are part of daily life it is important that artists are courageous in how they see and interpret the world. By extension, educators and public institutions must never shy away from engaging with the critical issues facing society today. The National Gallery has, since its foundation, tackled pertinent issues and debates through art acquisitions, exhibitions and the engagement of artists. NGA Director Nick Mitzevich discusses how Australia’s national art institution has a responsibility to amplify the voice of the artist and shares his vision as to how the Gallery will continue to lead the national cultural agenda. For further information about the National Visual Art Education Conference held at the National Gallery of Australia from 21–23 January 2019 visit www.nga.gov.au/nvaec.
