Decolonise your Feminism

Published 12 November 2020
Audio Tour Closed Captions
88 minutes

First Nations people have critiqued feminism for excluding them, their communities, their voices and aspirations. The critique has extended to feminism in the arts. This panel considers whether feminism can decolonise, the role of Sovereignty and the blak matriarchal centre in relation to contemporary art, collections and institutions. They reflect on anti-colonial practice in these spaces and the influence of feminism on First Peoples practice in a global context.

A keynote presentation by Yamatji woman, writer, academic and Vice-Chancellor's Indigenous Research Fellow at RMIT Dr Crystal McKinnon is followed by a conversation with Yorta Yorta curator, writer and Senior Curator, South-Eastern Aboriginal Collections at Museums Victoria and Artistic Associate RISING Festival Melbourne Kimberley Moulton, and Wemba-Wemba and Gunditjmara artist, curator, community arts worker, writer and academic Paola Balla.

Presented as part of the Know My Name Conference.

The Know My Name Virtual Conference was presented in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts, Australian National University School of Art & Design, University of Melbourne and UNSW Art & Design.

The Know My Name initiative is supported by Principal Patron Tim Fairfax AC

The National Gallery of Australia gratefully acknowledges the Partners and Donors whose generosity has allowed us to bring Know My Name to life.
